Henderson was born May 24, 1924, in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, to Clarence and Maude Lewellen Henderson. In the early years they made their home in Kansas City, Missouri, but soon settled in Wagoner where they raised their family. They were members of the Church of God. A.J. led the choir and sang in a quartet. He and Opal also attended the Wagoner Assembly of God and Pentecostal Holiness churches. A.J. served on the Wagoner City Council in the late 60s. He was a talented carpenter and home builder. He developed a housing addition on the east side of Wagoner off of Highway 51. He built Glen's Fry'd Chik'n and Skelly Station and Mallett Funeral Home Chapel. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly pheasant hunting. He also participated in rodeos as an amateur steer roper. A.J. departed this life on Thursday, May 13, 2010, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 86 years, and three days. He was preceded in death by his wife Opal, parents, four sisters, Nevorah Harris, Beulah Wilhite, Mary Putnam, Adda Lou Rosenthal, and one brother John Henderson. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Venda Irene and Ron Schump of Kansas City, Missouri, and Brenda Arlene and Curtis Turner of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Summer Turner and Jacqueline Turner, both of Tulsa, Dr. David Hennings and his wife, Staci, of Loveland, Colorado, and Jay Hennings and his wife, Natasha, of Kansas City, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Rebecca Hennings, Ryan Hennings, and Arianna Hennings; two sisters, Juanita Edwards of Wagoner and Rosetta Smith of Cashion, and other relatives and friends. A.J's greatest joy was his family; however, his greatest honor was the title of "Granddad."
