Obituary

Billy Wayne Newman Jr, 60, of Colonial Beach, VA passed from this world to the next on June 13, 2023 following health complications and a sudden, short diagnosis of cancer. Billy, a rambling man at heart, also lived in OK, FL, AL, MD, MS, and KS over the years. He is remembered for his big stories, countless jokes, and an uncanny ability to find treasures like four-leaf clovers and sharks teeth. Something you may not know about Billy is he had a great ear at picking up languages, including some Cherokee and Spanish.

Billy was born on November 15, 1962, the second of five children to Myra (Rawlings) and Bill Newman Sr, growing up in Colonial Beach, VA with his mother, grandmother Frances (Jenkins) Rawlings, siblings Vickie, Michael, Debbie, and Kenny, and beloved pets. As a kid he loved summer, jumping in the Potomac River and catching turtles.

At a young age he became a survivor which shaped the rest of his life, enduring a wild dog pack attack and grueling rabies treatment. Billy carried that relentless spirit with him all while continuing to be a dog and animal lover. For better or worse Billy was never once bitten twice shy.

As a teen Billy went to live with his father Bill in the Wagoner, OK area. Some of his fondest Oklahoma times were riding his dirt bike, having a great afro, canoeing the Illinois River, connecting with his roots, learning his father's trade, and starting a family.

Billy became a proud parent to his three children, Billy, Crystal, and Amanda with his then-wife Pam (Lawrimor). Billy's and Pam's journey together was only meant to be a chapter but their wedding day became a happy memory and he grew grateful for the care she gave their children. In recent years Billy would brag about his now-adult kids to any stranger around while grabbing his daily must-have black coffee, and recounting stories of go-karts and the old Florida days his family shared with his sister Vickie, brother-in-law John Harpo Webb, and niece and nephew Jennifer and Matthew.

Billy was well known in the Yulee/Fernandina Beach, FL area as a hard-working tradesman, particularly in the mobile home industry and later in tree services. He first moved to Northeast Florida over 30 years ago and fell for the natural beauty and small-town life. It became his home he always eventually returned to after traveling around until his retirement coinciding with the Pandemic. Working he particularly liked helping with storm and hurricane clean-ups, and he loved the time he went to the top of the outside of Amelia Island Lighthouse in a cherry picker bucket.

Recently Billy returned to his childhood hometown Colonial Beach in search of a simpler life, finding joy in feeding the birds and squirrels, watching classic TV, getting to know his neighbors, and bumping into long lost childhood friends. Grabbing a cheeseburger and chocolate shake at the diner or drive-thru and talking with everyone there and stopping for a lotto ticket and talking with everyone there was a big part of a great day for him.

Billy is proceeded in death by grandparents Raymond Taylor and Francis (Jenkins) Rawlings, grandparents Cecil and Stella (Bryant) Newman, father Bill Newman Sr, mother Myra (Rawlings) Shea, step-father John Shea, sister Vickie (Newman) Webb, loving pets, and ancestors.

Billy is survived by his three children, Billy (Rachel) Newman, Crystal (George) Pratt, and Amanda Adams, and his cherished six grandchildren. He left this world hoping they know he loves all of them deeply and for forever. Billy is also survived by countless relatives and friends he met along the way.

Billy would like everyone to learn from his life to be kind to each other, we never know what someone is going through. In lieu of flowers, donations, or a special service, Billy would like you to take the time to check in with old friends and family, enjoy a summer night campfire, and shoot some fireworks on the 4th of July for him. He will be laid to rest next to his mother in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, MD.
