Obituary

Carl Wesley Sissom, long-time Coweta resident was born on October 29, 1939, and died peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. In his younger years, Carl attended Lone Star School where he made many lifelong friends.  He often spoke of schoolyard pranks and games of pick-up baseball, where he was a coveted left-handed pitcher.

In 1963, he married Eva Marie Moss and together they raised 4 children.  Connie Reed (Tim) of Broken Arrow, OK, Barbara DeSimone of Broken Arrow, OK, Jim Hargrove of St. Joseph, MO, and Randy Sissom (Sasia) of Beggs, OK.  Many of their family memories involved Lone Star Baptist Church where the members became more like family.  At one time Carl drove the church bus and picked up kids for Sunday school.  Other family times spent together involved fishing, camping, riding horses, and sports.

Carl started a brick masonry business and employed his brother, JL Sissom, and his brother-in-law, Jay Moss.  He worked for many Tulsa area builders, but there was none he respected more than the late Jim Beale.  His business lasted well over 40 years.  He passed on his work ethic to many friends and family members over the years.  More than anything Carl loved the camaraderie of a bunch of guys working together.

Carl (also called "Wes" or "Son") was an avid coon hunter.  He competed in hunting events and won several trophies with his best hounds, Liz and Ace.  There was nothing he enjoyed more than his Saturday night hunts with his buddies, whom he remained connected with throughout his life; he truly valued their friendship.  Anyone who knew Carl knew that he was the best storyteller.

After retirement, he bought an RV and spent time camping and boating at Ft. Gibson Lake.  He passed on many life lessons to his 10 grandchildren during these outings.  He and Marie spent time with any family or friends that wanted to join them.  He was a loyal husband and was a dedicated caregiver to Marie until she lost her battle to kidney cancer.  They were married 46 years.

Later in life, he married Joann Peterson.  They moved to Okmulgee to be near the three youngest grandchildren.  Carl enjoyed gardening and raised the best tomatoes well into his 80's.  He drove himself to dialysis 3 days a week until he was 84.  Together he and Joann enjoyed listening to gospel music and spending time with family.

Carl is survived by his wife, Joann Sissom; sister, Christene; and many children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sissom; his parents; and 2 siblings, Elva Pauline Harris and JL Sissom.

A Celebration of Life, honoring the life of Carl Sissom will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at Lone Star Baptist Church in Coweta, OK.  Officiating is Pastor Sam Davis.

Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hulbert, Oklahoma.  Those serving as pallbearers are Andrew Hendrick, Daniel DeSimone, Darrell Hargrove, Ed Hargrove, Jim Hargrove, and Jay Moss.
