Clyde M. Garvin was born May 5, 1926 in Scott County, Arkansas to Claude and Eula Lee (Newberry) Garvin. He grew up in the Waldron, Arkansas area. In October 1945 Clyde married the former Maxine Owens, and they began a long and happy life together. In 1954 they moved to Wagoner. Clyde began a long career with the Safeway store when it was located on South Main Street, staying through the years and many changes and becoming store manager. He retired in 1987 when the store was called Homeland. Clyde and Maxine continued to live on their farm for a number of years. He was an avid quail hunter and quite a horseman in his day. Clyde was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Wagoner. He was honored to have the Garvin Activity Center named after him in recognition of his work and devotion in establishing that facility. Clyde was a dedicated member of the Wagoner Masonic Lodge #98 and a Thirty-third Degree Mason. Clyde Garvin departed this life on Monday, August 8, 2011 in Wagoner, OK at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 3 days. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Diane Garvin; his parents; three sisters, Gertrude, Lucille, and Pauline; and a brother, Wilburn. Survivors include Clyde's wife, Maxine, to whom he was a devoted husband for nearly 66 years; two sons and their wives, Randy and Pat Garvin of Batavia, Illinois and Paul and Betsy Garvin of O'Fallon, Illinois; a brother, Glenn Garvin, and his wife, Katie, of Panama City, Florida; four grandchildren and their spouses, Chad Garvin, Angie and John Thomas, Jennifer and Tom O'Stasik, and Chris and Kari Baesel; great-grandchildren, Bailee Thomas, Brooke Thomas, and Larkin O'Stasik; other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Wagoner. The Reverend Mark Pointer will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jerry O'Bannon, Frank Cooper, Roy Majtyka, Carl Myer, Jess Page and Harley Geurin. Honorary Pallbearers are Clyde's Sunday School Class, H. R. Hatfield, Jerry Bryan, Elmo Cannon and W.D. Roller. Interment will be in Pioneer Cemetery in Wagoner with Masonic Rites performed by the members of Wagoner Masonic Lodge # 98. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner.
