Obituary

Donald Carroll Shields was born November 27, 1944 in Morrill, Nebraska to Henry Arthur and Bernice (Dinnell) Shields. Don served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was very proud to have been a member of the SEABEES, the Navy Construction Battalion, especially the work he performed in Germany during the building and protecting of the Embassy. Before retirement Don was employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in southern California as a diesel mechanic. He and his wife, Betty, enjoyed many happy times while performing in their clown ministry. He was known as "Pockets" when in costume and was instrumental in developing a Christian based program for children called Careway. Following their move to Wagoner in 1999, Don enjoyed using his clowning talents to help fundraisers for the Whitehorn Cove and Toppers Fire Departments. Don was a Deacon of his Baptist Church in Grand Terrace, CA and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Wagoner. He volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Muskogee. Don and Betty also enjoyed collecting antiques. Donald departed this life on Saturday, December 7, 2013 in Wagoner, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Betty Lu Shields, in May of this year and a son, Jay Arthur Shields, in July. He was also preceded by a brother, Robert Shields, and a sister, Eula Byers. Survivors include a son, Brock Shields of Tulsa; two daughters, Tracey Whitehead and her husband, Lynn, of Sand Springs, and Sierra Uhrig of the home; two granddaughters, Elissa Harvey and Sheridan Shields, both of Tulsa; a sister, Joana Parker and her husband, E.D., and a brother, Larry Shields, and his wife, Penny, all of Whitehorn Cove near Wagoner; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved dog, Tasha.
