Edgar R. Drake was born in Wagoner, OK on August 26, 1919 to Wiliam T. and Ona A. (Parsons) Drake. Edgar went to Wagoner High School and was an outstanding football player for the Bulldogs. He played the guard position. In 1938, his senior year, the Bulldogs went undefeated in that season. He graduated from high school and joined the National Guard in Wagoner. Edgar married Naomi Arnold on February 28, 1940. He was drafted into the Army and served in the infantry. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded. He received a Purple Heart for his bravery. Edgar was sent to the hospital in England to recover. After returning home he worked for the Corps of Engineers for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He was a 50 year member of the Wagoner Masons and Odd Fellows. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Irene Brown and Ema Lou Johnson; brothers, Ervin Drake, William Drake, Robert Drake, Jack Drake; his son Jim Drake; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Drake and great-grandson, Chase Allen Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Naomi; two sons, John Drake of Wagoner, and wife, Martie, and Bill Drake of Wagoner and wife, Glenda. Edgar was blessed with 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren. Edgar passed away October 24, 2014 peacefully at home with his family, on the farm that he and his family lived on for 70 years. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2014 the Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner. Officiating will be the Reverend Leigh McCaslin. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner at a later date.
