Gerald Eugene Smith was born July 7, 1920 in Blue Ridge, Texas to Rufus Alvin and Willie (Tyner) Smith. His family moved to Oklahoma when he was very young, and Gerald graduated from high school in Calumet, Oklahoma. During World War II he served in the United States Army Air Corps. His courageous service to his country was recognized with a number of medals, including the Bronze Star Medal. He and Evelyn lived in Hawaii during their first years of marriage. Gerald was a farmer from an early age, and he and Evelyn ran a dairy farm for many years. Later he was employed by American Airlines as a mechanic for a number of years, retiring in 1982. He was active in the American Legion and a member of the Wagoner Immanuel Baptist Church. Gerald enjoyed going to Main Street Café. Gerald departed this life on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Veterans Center in Claremore, OK at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 9 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, by two sisters, Allene Whaley and Margaret Zorn, and a brother, Carlos Smith. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Smith of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Donna Smith of Broken Arrow; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Juanita Smith of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Jennifer Smith and Kyle and Kami Smith, all of Broken Arrow; great-grandchildren, Auryana Lynn Johnson and Kysen Michael Smith of Broken Arrow; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Wagoner. The Reverend Rick Boynes will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rick Newman, Rick Whitehead, Kyle Smith, Johnny Lunow, Jess Lunow and David Cravens. Interment will be in Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow. A visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner.
