Funeral Services for Glenn Dale Lawhorn, 80, of Wagoner will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Wagoner with the Reverend Wade Robertson and the Reverend Greg Cox officiating. Glenn will be escorted to the National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, OK by the Patriot Riders. Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion, Post 56. Pallbearers will be Richard Burrows, Roy Majtyka, Terry Jones, Carl Meyer and Doug Dalrymple. A Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, June 29 at Mallett Funeral Home. Glenn was born Nov. 22, 1933 in Wagoner, OK to Jean and Cora (Lane) Lawhorn. He left school at an early age and joined the U.S. Army, until his Honorable Discharge upon the determination he was fifteen at the time. At age eighteen he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War. Glenn continued his military career in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1974. He earned college credit while serving his country, and was known to be always learning and educating himself, including time spent in the library. In 1953, Glenn met Oleta Eden from Tahlequah, and one week later they were married in Arkansas and began a long and happy life together for 61 years. Decorated numerous times, Glenn served on PBR Ships in the rivers of Vietnam and aboard the U.S.S. Wren, the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the U.S.S. Antietam. After his military service, Glenn began working in the oil fields of the Southwest for Phillips Petroleum as an electronic engineer. For a time he was an EMT, driving an ambulance in Arizona. Glenn and his family returned home to Oklahoma where he taught electronics and motor controls to area businesses and schools. He was a member of the V.F.W. and C.A.S.A. Also, he was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Wagoner, serving at Bible Schools and as usher and teacher. Glenn loved fishing and tinkering'. He was known as a great jokester and story-teller. He was known by many as Popeye'. Glenn peacefully passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in Tulsa, OK. Along with his wife, Oleta, he is survived by his children, Bill Lawhorn and wife, Nancy, of Copan, OK and Kathy Peebles of Wagoner; three grandchildren, Ashley Lynne Lawhorn, Wesley Dale Lawhorn and Anthony Peebles; other relatives and many friends. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Faye Crabtree and Virginia Lamb.
