Memorial services for Jim Self, 74, of Wagoner will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 18 at the Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner with the Reverend Carl Murphy and the Reverend Clay Frost officiating. Jim was born May 23, 1939 in Haskell, OK to his parents, Pete and Ruby (McCutcheon)Self. At an early age, his family moved to Tulsa where he grew up and attended Will Rogers High School. Jim enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at various missile silos all over the country. At the end of his service he eloped with Billie Jean Smith to Texas to be married, a union lasting 54 years. After working and traveling all over the country, they settled in Wagoner in 1976 and established Self's Coney Island Restaurant. For 28 years the Coney' was a favorite for Wagoner's youth who were each remembered by the hundreds of school pictures which lined the walls. After closing the restaurant, Jim and Billie retired to the lake area near Wagoner where Jim could enjoy his bass fishing. He also loved the classic cars and enjoyed his membership in the Car Club. Jim was very involved in Wagoner youth projects, smoking and preparing bar-b-que for many of the area events over the years. Surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully Friday, March 14 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Roy Self and his sister, Rita Owens. He is survived by his loving wife, Billie; his children, Linda Self of Tulsa, Jimmy Self of Toppers, Donna Self of Florida and Connie Self of Dallas, Texas; his grandson, Dalton Self of the home; granddaughters, April Watkins and Ashley Bertalot; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
