John Wayne Franklin of Broken Arrow died January 1st. He was 69.
John (Wayne to his family) was born in Iola, Kansas. He grew up in Oklahoma City, where he attended Putnam City High School and earned his Eagle Scout. While playing tuba in the University of Oklahoma marching band he met the love of his life, the future Dr. Helen Lucinda Franklin. They married in 1976. Together they raised three children and were married for 45 years before Cinda's passing in 2021.
John was initially a police officer in Norman, Oklahoma before becoming a Special Agent for the Santa Fe Railroad. He then worked as a claim agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad, and finally retired from BNSF. He trained multiple generations of claim agents, wrote for industry publications, and won awards for his contributions to the industry.
John was a life-long follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ, and belonged to several Disciples of Christ congregations across the state. He served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, board member, and choir member. John also gave his time and service to charities that were close to his heart: Meals on Wheels, the Gideons, and a long commitment to the Claremore High School Band Boosters.
John is survived by his children John Patrick (Lisa), Jack Allen, and Lucinda "Lucy" Ann, and his grandchildren Lily, Finn, and Indie. He is also survived by his brother Jim and mother-in-law Jane. He was preceded by Cinda and his parents, John and Lillian.
