John David Huckabee

John David Huckabee, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, proud United States Army veteran, and longtime member of the Wagoner community, passed from this life on Monday, August 3, 2026, at his home in Wagoner, Oklahoma, surrounded by the love of his family.

John was born on June 3, 1946, in Plattsburgh, New York. He grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he graduated with the Class of 1964. His life was marked by service, hard work, and a genuine appreciation for the people and community around him.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army. His military service was a source of great pride throughout his life, and he carried with him the values of dedication, loyalty, and service that defined his time in the Army.

In 1985, John made Wagoner, Oklahoma, his home. He became the Circulation Director for the Wagoner newspaper, a position that allowed him to become well acquainted with the community and the people who called it home.

One of the greatest blessings in John’s life was the love he shared with Mary Evelyn Champlain. John and Mary were united in marriage on April 20, 1991. Together, they shared 35 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, companionship, and countless memories. Through the passing years and the many seasons of life, they remained by one another’s side.

John had a deep appreciation for history and for the community he called home. He was a proud Mason and a dedicated member of the Wagoner Historical Society for 14 years, remaining actively involved until his health began to decline. Some of the memories John and Mary especially cherished were the Monday night Wagoner Historical Society gatherings at Steak Out. Those evenings of fellowship, conversation, and friendship became a special part of their life together.

When he had time to relax, John enjoyed being outdoors. He enjoyed a good round of golf and especially loved the opportunity to go fishing. Whether spending time pursuing his favorite hobbies, visiting with friends, participating in the Historical Society, or simply enjoying time with his family, John appreciated the meaningful moments life offered.

Above all, John treasured his family. The 35 years he shared with Mary, the memories made with his children and grandchildren, and the relationships he formed throughout his lifetime were among his greatest treasures. His family and friends will remember a man who served his country proudly, worked faithfully, valued his community, and deeply appreciated the people who shared his journey.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Christopher Huckabee.

Those left to cherish the many memories of John’s life include his loving wife of the home, Mary Huckabee; his children, Gregory Scott Riley of Kellyville, Oklahoma, and Missy Chavez and husband, Brian, of Durant, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Gregory Scott Riley Jr., Michael Jacob Riley, Brittany Hope Riley, Matthew Allen Riley, and Carolane Renee Smithson; five great-grandchildren; along with numerous extended family members, friends, and members of the Wagoner community whose lives were touched by John throughout the years.

John leaves behind a life defined by service, devotion, and treasured memories. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the love he shared with his family, his service to his country, and his many years of involvement in the Wagoner community will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

A public viewing will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mallett Funeral Home with family and friends gathering in a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held to honor the life of John Huckabee on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Crossroads Church, Wagoner, Oklahoma. Pastor Gary Woodson will officiate.

A committal service will follow at Pioneer Cemetery in Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the United States Army Funeral Honors Team will conduct Military Honors. Those serving as casket bearers include Brian Chavez, Doug Hall, Mike Riley, Matt Riley, Dene Shoemaker, and Spencer Pack.  Honorary casket bearers include Burt Richmond and John Greeley.
