Obituary

Graveside funeral services for Joseph H. Jake' Bradfield will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Elmwood Cemetery, Wagoner, OK with the Reverend Dan French officiating. Jake was born June 24, 1925 in rural Kingfisher County, Oklahoma to his parents, Clarence Paul and Lucy Kathryn (Downs) Bradfield. During high school, his family moved to the Wagoner area where Jake graduated. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the 10th Mountain Division, 87th Mountain Infantry, Ski Patrol. In the spring of 1945, in the Apennine Mountains on northern Italy, Jake's company came under fire from enemy shelling. Without orders, he made trips through the night during heavy combat, over long distances, supplying ammunition and repairing communication lines. Jake was awarded the Bronze Star for his uncommon, courageous and selfless actions and awarded the Purple Heart for the life threatening injuries he suffered. Healed from his wounds, still carrying much of the shrapnel in his body, Jake returned home where he would be united in marriage to the former Geneva Pauline Stacy. Making their home in Wagoner, Jake began his long career as an automotive repairman with the Stacy Motor Co. before opening his own shop on west Cherokee. Jake was always involved in his community, serving on the volunteer fire department, search and rescue and the Civil Defense. Retiring after 21 years of work, he had more time to enjoy hunting, gardening and being outdoors. A fierce and loyal patriot, Jake loved the freedoms of our country almost as much as the lives of his grandchildren. He passed away Saturday, Sept. 15 in Tulsa surrounded by his family. Jake was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geneva and his brother, Clarence Earl Bradfield. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Kyle and husband, Hugh of Wagoner and Shari Steinwinter and husband, Tom of Cave Creek, AZ; grandchildren, Laura Lynn Kyle of Owasso, Elyssia Gallagher and Joseph of Tucson, AZ and Jeffrey Kyle and Mary of Wagoner; great-grandchildren, Shanna, Jackson and Nathan Kyle also of Wagoner; a sister, Betty Lou Rogers of Wagoner, other relatives and many friends. Military Honors will be performed by the VFW Honor Guard of Tulsa. Final arrangements are directed by Mallett Funeral Home of Wagoner.
