A Funeral Mass for Katherine (Kay) Phillips-Laird will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wagoner, with the Rev. Father Joseph Orthel officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mike Phillips, Greg Phillips, Dylan Phillips, Jace Sharp, Emile Meyer and Preston Phillips. Sons-in-law John Watson and Jay Sharp will serve as honorary pallbearers. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner followed by a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Jim Ruyle officiating. Katherine and her twin sister, Karol, were born July 1, 1925 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Raymond and Lucille (Harrington) Brown. She moved with her family to Tulsa at an early age and attended Central High School. At Central High School she met Roy (Bo) Phillips, her future husband. As teenagers Kay and her twin moved to California where they danced as professional dancers in variety stage shows in Hollywood. Kay also danced at Radio City in New York City. After her marriage to Bo they moved back to Oklahoma, eventually settling in rural Wagoner to raise their family of six children. Kay was a busy homemaker and devoted mother, always very involved in her children's lives serving as a den mother, camp fire leader, band boosters and other activities. She taught ballroom dancing to a generation of young people from the Wagoner area. The community benefited from her talent for dance by her choreography of local pageants and the playhouse association. Kay enjoyed all of the arts, in addition to sewing, antiquing, and playing bridge. She was an inspiration to many through her work with Weight Watchers. Kay was at all times a dedicated and active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Kay Laird passed away peacefully, Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at the Wagoner Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings; a son, Steve Phillips, and her husband, James Laird. She is survived by five of her children and their spouses, John and Libby Phillips, Karol and John Watson, all of Wagoner, Robert Bob' and Trisha Phillips of Tulsa; Tim Phillips, and Rebecca and Jay Sharp, all of Wagoner; her former spouse and father of her children, Roy (Bo) Phillips of Wagoner; her grandchildren, Mike and Amy Phillips, Leslie and Chris Spicer, Greg and Jennifer Phillips, Emile Meyer, Preston Phillips, Julie Ledbetter, Katie Watson, Dylan Phillips, Jessica and Daniel Buchanan and Jace Sharp; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
