Obituary

Kathryn Sue (George) Durrett was born on July 14, 1950, to Fred Franklin George and Norma Jean (Elkins) George, in Porter, Oklahoma.  Kathryn graduated from Porter High School before pursuing higher education at Northeastern State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Elementary Education.  She furthered her education in later years by obtaining a master's degree in Elementary Education and a second master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Kathryn positively impacted countless lives throughout her career, and her dedication to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment exemplified her commitment to excellence in education.  Kathryn taught kindergarten and first grade in Muskogee Public Schools from 1972-1992; she served as Principal of Muskogee's first elementary magnet school, Benjamin Franklin Science Academy from 1992-1995; and was Assistant Superintendent of curriculum and Instruction with Muskogee Public Schools from 1995-2000; Kathryn spent three years serving as the Associate Director of Great Expectations at Northeastern State University; and closed out her career as the Associate Director and Chief Financial Officer for QuESTT  Inc, from 2003-2020; primarily supporting the Upward Bound program and high school students working to be the first in their families to attend college.  In September 2020,  Kathryn retired, becoming a full-time grandmother.

Kathryn received many awards and honors throughout her career.  These included:
•    Muskogee Education Association's Teacher of the Year Award for vigorous, creative, and imaginative teaching;
•    Outstanding Administrative Leadership Award, Muskogee Public Schools;
•    Oklahoma Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development's Leadership Award for outstanding instructional leadership;
•    Tribute to Education Award presented by Muskogee Chamber of Commerce in recognition for important contributions to education;
•    Northeastern State University College of Education's first Outstanding NSU Alumnus Award for excellent achievement;

Kathryn cherished her family deeply and found immense joy in her roles as mother and grandmother.  Her love and devotion to her family were evident in the meaningful moments and experiences she shared with them.

Kathryn departed this life on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the age of 74 years.  Preceding her in death are her parents, Fred and Norma George; daughter, Lacey Renee Durrett; and siblings, Judith George, Carol Adams, and Fred George Jr.

Those left to cherish the many fond memories of her life include her daughter, Rachel (Durrett) Kaiser; grandson, Tatum Paul Kaiser; sister, Vicki (George) Keele; and many wonderful friends, all whom will miss her immensely.

A Celebration of Life honoring Kathryn Durrett's life will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Mallett Funeral Home.  Pastor Don Blakenship will officiate.

Interment will be Private.
