Larry Gene McMahan was born December 20, 1950 in Wagoner, Oklahoma. He was the youngest child born to Sarah Clementine (Elrod) McMahan and Benjamin McMahan Sr. He graduated from Okay High School and then attended Connors State College at Warner, OK where he completed requirements for an Associate's Degree in General Studies.
Larry's first job was as a gas station attendant where he reported he was paid in pop and candy. In turn he worked at Walmart in the sporting goods department, as a dispatcher in the Wagoner County Sheriff's office, at Prestolite and as a security guard. His longest employment was at Unarco, from which he retired in 2004.
Larry married the former Elizabeth Ann "Liz" Gilbert in 1972. Together they owned and operated Sullivan's Hardware in downtown Wagoner and later worked together in the Wagoner Historical Museum. Following Liz's death in 2018 Larry continued his part time work at the museum. His interest in history and love of visiting with people made him a valuable contact for visitors to Wagoner.
Larry's was a gentle and loving spirit who always put family first. He had a great sense of humor and loved big family dinners. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, attending as many of the activities of his grandchildren as he could.
His hobbies included gun and pocketknife collecting. He loved to hunt, especially quail. He was a member of the Oklahoma Early V-8 Ford Club out of Tulsa. Almost every day Larry met with friends for coffee, not just once, but several times in one day.
Larry departed this life early Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at his home north of Wagoner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Liz McMahan; his parents, Sarah and Benjamin McMahan Sr.; all of his siblings, Ben McMahan Jr., Virginia Hyden, Hubert McMahan, Betty Chitwood and Donald McMahan.
Larry will be greatly missed by his family and friends who survive him. They include his son and daughter-in-law, James and Rose McMahan of Wagoner, OK; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Adam McKinzie of Depew, OK; grandsons, Darren Watkins, Wyatt McMahan, Walker McMahan and Cale McKinzie; great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
The service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner, OK.
Viewing will be on Thursday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a visitation to be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
