Leon White was born January 12, 1930 in Wagoner, OK to Clifford and Cora (Burk) White. He served in the United States Army and settled in Hulbert, OK where he was an active and contributing member of the community his entire life. Since 1957 Leon had his own upholstery business. At the time of his death, Leon was still working where he began 43 years ago when the Cherokee County Rural Water District 11 was established, and Leon was instrumental in obtaining the easements needed to lay the water lines. Just this year Leon was presented the Operator of the Year award in Oklahoma City. Leon attended the Spring Valley Freewill Baptist Church. He was active in the Hulbert schools and served on the Hulbert School Board for 15 years. It was Leon who established the Girls' All Sports Trophy, and he was a founding member of the Athletic Booster Club, where he served as President for 10 years. Leon departed this life early Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 19 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jared Brave; three brothers, Raymond, Sidney, and James White; and a sister, Mildred Foster. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris (Brummett) White of the home; two children, Cherie Leonnia Brave of Hulbert and James Lee White of the home; five grandsons and their wives, Lucas White, Samuel and Shayla Brave, Buster and Brooke Brave, Jessie and Marissa White, and Charles and Alyssa Gipson; one granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Massey and husband, Dylan; eight great-grandchildren, Breanna White, Devin Massey, Jared Brave, Hunter Leon Brave, Karolyn Massey, Ally Gipson, Loren Gipson and Wyatt White; a sister, Eva Manes of Wichita, KS; his lifelong friend and army buddy, Charles Sapp and wife, Reba, of Panama City, FL; a number of nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. The family will be present for a Visitation Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Hulbert High School Gymnasium with interment following in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Reverend Charlie Levi and Reverend Bobby Botts will officiate. Pallbearers will be Josh Hubbard, Timmy Clinton, Jesse Martin, Carl Dill, Leslie Steelmon, Terry Wilson, and Daryl Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Teague, Grant Phelps, Stanley McMillan, Perry Stevenson, Jack Young, George Butler and Buddy Foster.
