Marjorie (Coonrod) Smith was born May 23, 1915 in Savoy, IL to Lewis Gale and Isabelle Jenny (Dunlap) Coonrod. After graduating from high school in Champaign, IL, Marjorie first pursued an education in art. She later attended a business school learning the secretarial skills that she used for many years in various businesses, including banks and the Farm Bureau Insurance in Wagoner. She was married to Sidney G. Smith in 1942. As a member of the U.S. Army, he was soon shipped to England to serve and Marjorie contributed to the war effort as a secretary for the major runway construction of the project at Chanute Air Force base in Rantoul, IL. Following the war, for a time Marjorie singly maintained the home front on a ranch in Colorado while Sidney worked as a travelling salesman. The family later relocated to Oklahoma where Marjorie has made her home since that time.
After retiring at age 75, Marjorie continued to live in her home in Wagoner, her zest for life limited only by her failing eyesight. On her 100st birthday Marjorie celebrated by going for a motorcycle ride with her grandson, Mark White. Her family was privileged to celebrate with her on her 101st birthday last May.
Marjorie Smith departed this life Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Tulsa, OK. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Gilkison Smith, in 1979 by her parents, Lewis and Isabelle Coonrod; and two brothers, Pete Coonrod and Albert Coonrod.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice White and her husband, Charles, of Wagoner; one son, Christopher Smith of Pagosa Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Mark White and wife, Tracy, of Coweta, OK, Sheryl Rice and husband, Raymond, of Velma, OK, Natalie Smith of Santa Monica, CA and Hunter Smith of Jacksonville Beach, FL; two great-grandchildren, Cassie White of Stillwell, OK and Shelby Rice of Velma, OK; one sister, Helen Percival and husband, Gene of Norway, ME; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK, the date to be announced. Officiating will be Dick Vowell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alvin Baker, Carl Meyer, Raymond Rice, Dick Vowell, Charles White and Mark White. Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
