Mikel Kent McKinney, better known to family and friends as Mike, departed this life on Saturday, February 27, 2026, at Saint Francis Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 80 years old.
Mike was born on October 29, 1945, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Willie James McKinney and Hazel Lucille (Strickland) McKinney. Raised with strong values of hard work, faith, and family, Mike carried those principles with him throughout his life and passed them on to those who knew and loved him. On September 20, 1971, Mike married the love of his life, Patty Ann Odneal. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 54 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their greatest joy was the family they created together, which Mike cherished deeply
Following high school, Mike pursued higher education, first attending the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Northeastern State University, where he earned his master’sdegree. His passion for learning naturally led him into education, where he dedicated many years to shaping the lives of young people. Mike served as a respected educator before becoming Vice Principal at Wagoner Middle School, where he faithfully served students, teachers, and families for ten years until his retirement. Known for his steady leadership, fairness, and genuine care for students, Mike left a lasting impression on the Wagoner community.
Outside of his career, Mike found great happiness in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter who especially enjoyed deer, pheasant, and dove hunting. Many of his most treasured memories were made in the quiet of the woods or fields with friends and family. He also loved bass fishing and spending time outdoors whenever he could. In the fall, Mike could almost always be found cheering on his beloved Oklahoma Sooners, as he was a devoted OU football fan.
Above all else, Mike loved his family. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and uncle who found immense joy in the lives of those closest to him. His kindness, quiet strength, and steady presence will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, W. J. and Hazel McKinney, and his brother, Doc Bill McKinney.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will live on in the hearts of his family, including his beloved wife, Patty McKinney of the home; his children, Dr. Bob McKinney and wife Marjorie of Wagoner, Oklahoma, and Mikey McKinney of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his cherished grandchildren, Marshall, Will, and Jenna; his nephews, Brad McKinney, Cam McKinney, and Chris McKinney; and his nieces, Michelle McKinney and Shannon McKinney.
Mike will be deeply missed, but his life of dedication to family, education, and the outdoors will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. His memory will forever remain a guiding presence in the hearts of his family and friends.
The Family of Mikel McKinney has entrusted his care and cremation to Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory, 417 East Cherokee Street, Wagoner, Oklahoma, 74467. 918-485-2911
