Mildred Daniels (Downey) passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, in Claremore, OK. She was 97 years old. Mildred was the oldest of 10 children born to Mel and Dora Downey. Although born into poverty, her life was rich in love, humor and inquisitiveness, all of which she retained up until her death. One evening in November of 1936, she met a young man that captured her heart. They married 3 ½ months later on February 15, 1937. She became the wife of Bert Daniels. After W.W. II, they resided on the north side of Tulsa and raised 2 children, Dick and Marsha, and established a small barbershop that became the hub of the community. Mildred participated in most of the activity of the shop since it was essentially the front room of the house. She estimated that she helped raise about 60 other kids that came through their shop. After their children had grown, Bert and Mildred moved to the Whitehorn Cove area on Fort Gibson Lake to enjoy their later years. After her husband died in 1991, Mildred became involved in a Wagoner School Program as a Grandmother, and again started to help raise another 60 or so kids in her 70's and 80's. Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Bert, 2 sisters, Jackie and Pete, and 3 brothers, Connie, Dude and Stormy. She is survived by her children Dick and Marsha, daughter-in-law, Barbara, 3 sisters, Pat, Tootsie and Babe, a brother Dan, sisters-in-law, Sue and Mary Downey and 5 grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 19, at 12 p.m. (Noon) at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wagoner, OK.
