Oklalena Harris was born March 14, 1929 in Calera, Oklahoma to Vernon Miles and Minnie Lou (Neugen) Merritt, her family having moved from Texas. She married Jesse Vernon Harris at an early age, and they set out on a long and happy journey together that spanned more than 66 years of marriage. Oklalena was a good example of the Bible verse, Ruth 1:16, which reads, "And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;". She and Jesse moved a countless number of times as he followed his work in road construction. They settled in Wagoner in 2000, near where Jesse began his life, and became members of the Wagoner Church of Christ. Oklalena's family remembers how much she enjoyed her life and lived it to the fullest. She was especially fond of flowers. Oklalena was a devoted wife to Jesse Harris of the home; a loving mother to her daughter, Wynoka Sunday of Enid and her son and daughter-in-law, Vernon Ray and Janice Marie Harris of Denton, TX; doting grandmother to three grandchildren, Luella Flores of Enid, Vernon Austin and wife, Felicia, Harris of Little Elm, TX and Gavin Michael and wife, Wendy Harris of Los Alamos, NM; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Riley Harris and Halle Lavonne Harris; caring sister to Ellis Diehl of Calera, OK, Elmer Miles Merritt of Newport News, VA and Hubert Dean Merritt of Tucson, AZ; and fond aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Oklalena O. Harris went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at her home in Wagoner, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Minnie Merritt and a brother, Calvin Merritt. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2012 at Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner, OK. The minister of Wagoner Church of Christ, Mr. Dan Fredman, will officiate. Interment will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hulbert, OK. Pallbearers will be Bill Patterson, Mike Cooper, Ray Harris and Gary Daniels. Honorary pallbearers will be Austin Harris and Gavin Harris.
