Patsy Ruth Lawson was born January 5, 1928 in Wichita Falls, TX, the third child born to L.C. "Jim" and Iola (McCurdy) Spicer. Her parents moved near Chickasha, OK when she was an infant and lived there until she was 8 years old, at which time the parents bought a farm and moved near Sulphur, OK. Patsy attended Buckhorn rural school then high school at Sulphur, graduating 3rd in her class of 42. She was a member of the National Honor Society for 3 years. During World War II she and her mother lived at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf where her mother was the infirmary nurse. She volunteered at the USO during war, where soldiers from Norman and the Air Force from Ardmore found friendship and a home away from home.
In 1945, after graduation, she moved to Oklahoma City and worked in the office of Wilson Meat Packing. In December, 1946 she married Al Ashbrener and moved to the campus of Oklahoma State University where he was a student. After the completion of his studies they moved to Phoenix, AZ where she worked for the Salt River Power District. In 1950 they moved back to Oklahoma City. She was a stay at home mom to two children, Gale and Mark. When living in Oklahoma City she took painting classes and painted many pictures over the years, many of them given as gifts. She was a member of the Art Guild for many years. In 1964 the family moved to Wagoner, OK where they lived on the lake at Taylor Ferry. In 1968 she and Al divorced.
In April, 1969, Pat married Lowel Lawson, and they spent 40 happy years before he died in December, 2009. They traveled all over the United States, tent and RV camping, enjoying the beauty of nature. Colorado was a special place to visit.
In 1970 Pat joined the First United Methodist Church where she served in various areas; children's department, VBS, Sunday school, as a member of Adm. Council, annual conference delegate for 2 years, kitchen help, United Methodist Women as president and other offices and Believers Sunday school. She was also a Camp Fire leader for many years.
They were big basketball fans, and in the 70's and 80's they held cookouts for the Wagoner teams at end of season. They were such fans that they were presented lifetime Wagoner athletics passes.
Patsy departed this life Saturday evening, June 17, 2017 at Wagoner Community Hospital at the age of 89 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowel Lawson; a daughter, Gale Ann Ashbrener; a grandson, John Lowel Hays; a brother, Bill Spicer and a sister, Betty Spicer.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Mark and Brenda Ashbrener of Wagoner, Teresa Marruffo of Wagoner, Stephanna and Michael Hays of Wagoner and Tommy and Tana Lawson of Wagoner; grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Joe Hopping of Wagoner, Jill and Josh Wood of Fort Riley, KS, Sara Marruffo and Torrie Blodget of Portland, OR, Rosa Marruffo of New York City, and Cristina Marruffo of Tulsa, LaDonna and Rick Henson of Wagoner, Kendra and Ed Jackson of Porter, OK, Amber and Davin Hallford of Tulsa, Michael T. Lawson and Lauren of Texas, Bryan Carr of AR, Brandon and Kassy Carr of Wagoner and Brock and Jessica Carr of Wagoner; great-grandchildren, Eli Hopping, Nicksy Hopping, Sheldon Love, Chaylor Love, Bristo Love, Zenon Garcia, J'Luca Garcia, Kage Henson, Kenzie Carr, Garrett Carr, Benjamin Lawson and Sophia Lawson; a sister-in-law, Betty Spicer; other relatives and friends, especially her longtime friend, Dorothy Padgett.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Wagoner. The Reverend Jim Hollifield will officiate. Friends and family may view on Tuesday from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM at Mallett Funeral Home, or prior to the service in the church parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Children's Department.
Services and cremation are entrusted to Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory.
