Obituary

Funeral services for Polly Jane (Harry) Whitekiller, 92, of Hulbert, OK will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 22 at the Mallett Funeral Home Chapel in Wagoner with the Reverend Jim Carey officiating. Pallbearers will be B. J. Whitekiller, Dobson Rooster, Doug Bryant, Paul Carey, Ryan Sierra and Jake Whitener. Honorary pallbearers will be Buck Christie and Richard Chucalate. Interment will be in Round Springs Hollow Cemetery in Delaware County with the Reverend Rufus King officiating. Polly was born September 18, 1917 in rural Delaware County near Jay, Oklahoma to her parents, Taylor and Sallie (Mouse) Harry. The youngest of 5 children, she was a graduate of the Sequoyah Indian School. Polly was a long-time, devoted member of the New Hope Baptist Indian Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and held many other offices in the church. She enjoyed teaching the Cherokee language and the Cherokee Bible to the many children she cared for. Another of her God given talents which she mastered was the art of quilting. She was a recipient of the National Living Treasure award for her hand sewn quilts in 2001. A kind and caring woman, she opened her home many times to friends and whomever was in need. Polly went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, at her home in Hulbert. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Birdchopper (Amos) Whitekiller; her 2 brothers, Claude and Arch Harry; and 2 sisters, Jennie Blevins and Flossie Summerfield and a half sister, Mae Orpha Harry. She is survived by her son, Billy Joe Whitekiller and his wife, Marion; a daughter, Barbara Weavel, all of Hulbert; a granddaughter, Denise Rooster and her husband, Dobson, of Tahlequah; a grandson, Billy Joe Whitekiller Jr., also of Hulbert; 2 great-grandsons, Jorden and Joshua Rooster numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
