Obituary

Rev. Wayne Naugher was born March 31, 1932 in Celina, Texas, and left this world a better place on March 28, 2015. He was a graduate of Denton High School and North Texas State University both in Denton, Texas; as well as Southwestern Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. In his nearly 83 years of life on this earth, he proved to people that anyone, including a young man from a cotton farm in north Texas, could be used in a mighty way by God. Known mainly as "Brother Wayne", he served his God by serving others. Wayne was called to the ministry at a time when we was preparing to enter another vocation, and we're all grateful he changed course. He pastored several small churches in Texas before moving to Fairview Baptist Church in Durant, Oklahoma, then moving to his final destination, First Baptist Church, Wagoner, Oklahoma, where he served faithfully for 30 years until retirement. His passion for dealing with those in critical health needs led him to be a hospice chaplain for several years after stepping away from full-time ministry. His love of Wagoner had him involved in numerous community activities including Rotary Club, where he elected as President, the Ministerial Alliance, Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army and local Boy Scouts clubs, not to mention his pride in Wagoner High School athletics. He also was selected to serve in numerous board and leadership capacities at the local, state and national level of the Southern Baptist Convention. Wayne and his wife Sue were blessed by First Baptist Wagoner with a trip to Israel and Greece, a life-changing experience for both. Later they were asked to participate in a Southern Baptist Convention ministry effort to Hong Kong, where Wayne preached for four weeks at local churches to strengthen their faith before the communist takeover. Wayne's legacy at First Baptist Church was more than increased attendance and adding much-needed buildings and renovations. The greater impact can be found on the community and world at large, as he led many to the Lord, plus inspired numerous youth and young adults who moved into various ministry roles around the world. His unwavering belief in God's grace for all was evident in how he treated people up until his death. He is preceded in death by his parents John Clarence and Audie Carter Naugher; his in-laws Bill and W.D. Morgan; and a sister Bobbie Jean (Naugher) Moody. He is survived by his beautiful wife and soulmate of 59 years, Mary Sue Naugher; two sons, John of Dallas, and Andrew and his wife Amy of Tulsa; nine grandchildren; and three siblings, Billie Myers, Jimmie Naugher and Mitchell Naugher. Best of all, numerous lives will be spending eternity in heaven because of his ministry and a life well lived. A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Wagoner. The Reverend Mark Pointer and Dr. Jimmie Naugher officiated. Interment was Thursday, April 2, 2015 in Thurmond-Fairview Cemetery, Rhome, Texas. Proverbs 3:5&6 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
