Ruth Florence Horton passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 96 years.
She was born June 22, 1924 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Odus Leo and Effie Cynthia (Horn) Hutchens.
Ruth grew up in Mazie, Oklahoma where she and her twin sister, Ruby, were stars on the Mazie Mustang girl's basketball team. During her early adult years, Ruth was a Rosie Riveter during World War II and a homemaker. She had worked as a grocery store clerk and retired as a cafeteria manager for Tulsa Public Schools. Ruth loved working jigsaw puzzles and reading. She also enjoyed sports and was a huge OU girl's basketball fan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Senior Citizens both in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
Ruth married Frank M. Horton on June 8, 1944 in Wagoner. Frank preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Modrel Hutchens; and her sister, Ellen Wood.
Ruth is survived by her children, Frank Michael Horton and wife, Laurie, of Tulsa, Ruth Elaine Pawley and husband, Ron, of Edmond and Betty Lou West and husband, Bob, of Edmond; her grandchildren, Michael Scott Horton, Jason L. Pawley, Christi-Lynn Bethea, Lori Michelle Graham, Travis Michael Pawley, and Robert Gregory West; great grandchildren, Colby Bethea, Sadie Bethea, Sam Bethea, Nathan Graham, Knox Pawley and Theo Pawley; twin sister, Ruby Jane Taylor of Wagoner; brother, Billy Jack Hutchens and wife, Mary Lou, of Wagoner; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 24, at Mallett Funeral Home.
Prior to private interment in Elmwood Cemetery, the family will gather for a committal service at Mallett Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2020. Reverend Mark Pointer will officiate. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020 in the Multipurpose Activity Center at the First Baptist Church in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers the families asked that donations be made to Susan G. Komen Foundation at www.komenoklahoma.org and/or Coffee Bunker at www.coffeebunker.org
