The funeral service to celebrate the life of Ruth Martin, 77, a longtime Wagoner resident and first grade teacher, will be at 11:00 am Saturday, August 10, 2019 in the Chapel at Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory, 417 East Cherokee Street, Wagoner. Pastor Brandon Morton will officiate.
Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner. Pallbearers will be Harold Tohlen, Scott Tohlen, Mike Carroll, Gary James, Cory Martin and Thomas Street.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, Viewing will be Friday beginning at 10:00 am.
Evelyn Ruth Martin was born January 15, 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan to Jewell Evelyn (Miles) Miller Garrison and Wesley Hobart Miller. She married Jerry Lee Martin in Stillwell, OK on October 3, 1960. They made their home in Wagoner, OK, moving to Tulsa, OK in 2010.
Ruth was a well-known and admired first grade teacher in Wagoner Public Schools for 29 years. She began teaching at Central and moved to Maple Park Elementary, from which she retired. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wagoner. She generously volunteered her time and talents in the church, especially during vacation bible school.
In her spare time Ruth liked to read and enjoyed decorating. She had a passion for gardening. Her greatest pleasure was family time, particularly with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ruth departed this life Friday, August 2, 2019 at her home in Tulsa at the age of 77 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Martin, in 2017 and by her father, Wesley Miller.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Crystal and Gary James of Wagoner, OK and Tina and Chris Short of Sand Springs, OK; her mother, Jewell Garrison of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Thomas Street of Coweta, OK, Megan and Cory Martin of Edmond, OK and Katy and Michael Batson of El Paso, TX; four great-grandchildren, Brody, Ty, Tariah and Jack; three siblings and their spouses, Peg and Harold Tohlen of Broken Arrow, OK, David and Karen Miller of Duncan, OK and Donna and Roger Larkey of Tulsa, OK; a number of nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.
