IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Toka
Whitman
March 21, 1941 – March 3, 2018
On March 3, 2018, Toka Elrod Whitman, 76, left this world unexpectedly to be reunited with her Lord and Savior.
Toka Lynn was born March 21, 1941 to Frances Pope Elrod and Jasper Elrod in Muskogee, OK. At the age of 16, Toka married the love of her life, Walter "W.T." Whitman, and they embarked upon their life adventure together for the next 60 years, producing 7 children, 17 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
Toka graduated from Central High School and then earned her nursing degree from Bacone College. She continued her nursing career for 30 years in the Muskogee area. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist church of Checotah and dearly loved the ladies in her Sunday school class.
Toka was preceded in death by her mother and father and son Harley Wayne Whitman. She is survived by her loving husband W.T., son Mark of Checotah, son Daniel of Checotah, daughter Deborah Gava and husband Mike of Rosemond, CA, son Todd Whitman and wife Deborah of Muskogee, son Lance Whitman and wife Kristy of Checotah, daughter Lisa Dotson and husband Paul of Muskogee, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her brother Joel Elrod and wife Johnnie Sue, brother Jerry Layman and wife Dee.
Toka's great enjoyment in life was spending time with family and friends. She welcomed everyone into her home to pull up a chair at the table, and no one left her house hungry. She often said that her greatest accomplishment in life was her children, and she loved each one unconditionally. She adored her grandchildren and great grandbabies and never missed an opportunity to show pictures of them.
Toka was a loving, compassionate woman who always thought of others before herself. She quietly did the Lord's work without ever wanting attention or accolades. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary and insisted that even her adult grandchildren needed valentines and Easter baskets. Her kind spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church in Checotah. Pastor Ronnie Lindsey will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Alzheimer or cancer research.
