Wheeler Bancroft "W.B." Cleland Jr. was born May 17, 1926 in Wagoner, OK to Wheeler Bancroft Cleland Sr. and Katherine Marie (Shammerhorn) Cleland. As a youngster he was active in the Scouts, attaining the designation of Life Scout. After graduating from high school W.B. attended OSU. When World War II came along he served in the United States Navy from 1943-1945. He served on the U.S.S. Dade and was part of the first amphibian force to land on Okinawa. From 1954 until 1983 he worked as a steelworker for Sheffield Steel in Sand Springs, OK. During that time W.B. served as President of his union. W.B. later worked as a valued employee of the City of Wagoner at the Water Plant, retiring from the city in September, 1994. He was a Master Mason, and in 1973 he and his two brothers, Bill and Kenneth, all received their 32nd Degrees in the Scottish Rite, the first time for three brothers at one time. W.B. Cleland departed this life on Monday, January 26, 2015 at Tulsa, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Banita Sue DeRamus and Cherry Ann McCall; one brother, Bill Cleland, and a brother-in-law, Ray Ferguson. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Fay Cleland, of the home; his son, Kenneth Eugene Cleland and his wife, Denise, of Tulsa, OK; a step-daughter, June Karraker of Broken Arrow, OK; eight grandchildren; more than 20 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth "Corky" Cleland, and his wife, Carol, of Wagoner; sister, Kitty Ferguson of Wagoner; sister-in-law, Velma Cleland of Wagoner; other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be Friday, January 30, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Wagoner, OK. The Reverend Bobby Jenkins will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner. The funeral procession will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders. Military Rites will be performed by the Donaghe-Elliot American Legion Post 56. Pallbearers will be Michael Keith, Joseph Keith, Josh Martin, Brandon Cleland, Jimmy Wheeler, Jake Kelley, Rod Ferguson and Dub Cleland. Honorary pallbearers will be Chase Kelley, Chance Kelley, Ernest Hillhouse and Bobby Hillhouse. Arrangements are by Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner.
