William D. Welch, lovingly known as Bill, passed away peacefully at his home in Gosnell, Arkansas, on July 7, 2026, at the age of 84, with his beloved wife by his side.
Bill was born on October 28, 1941, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. His military service was a source of great pride, and the friendships he formed endured throughout his life. Bill remained involved with his fellow shipmates of the USS Rainier, serving in the roles of newsletter writer and President of the association, until 2019. The camaraderie and lifelong bonds he shared with his shipmates meant the world to him.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Welch; his children, KayLynn Weathers (Ed), Billy Welch (Linda), David Grice (Michelle), and Cecil Lowe (Jamie); his grandchildren, Justin Gregorio (Brittany), Destani Escamilla, April Disler (Brian), John Haught (Melissa), Dylan Welch, Jasmine Welch; his great-grandchildren, Angelina Gregorio, Evalee Carrillo, Kaylani Carrillo, Christian Nash, Sawyer Haught and Hunter Haught; and his brother, James Ford (Anita).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lennie Ford, and his beloved grandson, Michael Gregorio.
Bill's family finds comfort in knowing he spent his final days in the place he loved most, at home with his wife and beloved dog, Roxanna.
A funeral service celebrating Bill's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner, Oklahoma. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026 from 5 to 7 pm in the Chapel of Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory.
Bill will be remembered for his quiet strength, love for his family, his dedication to his fellow veterans, and the friendships he cherished throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
