William Lloyd Mitchell entered this life on September 8, 1926 in Chetopa, Kansas, the youngest son of Velma Opal (Fuller) Mitchell and Albert Ephrium Mitchell. Lloyd's family moved to the farm west of Wagoner, OK in 1932 when Lloyd was six years old, and Lloyd lived on the farm for the rest of his life.
Lloyd joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 to serve his country in WWII. He served in the South Pacific. While he was in route to the Philippines, Japan surrendered, ending the war. Lloyd served his remaining time in Japan helping with the reconstruction.
When Lloyd returned home, his father, Albert was very sick. Lloyd farmed the land for his family. Later his mother, Opal left the 160 acres farm to Lloyd. Over time Lloyd added another 160 acres to his holdings. At his peak, Lloyd farmed over 600 acres at one time. His work as a farmer and cattleman earned him the Wagoner County Conservation award in 1977. He was very proud of his farm and its ownership.
He married Verna Mae Morrison in 1969. They lived as man and wife for thirteen years until her death from cancer at the age of 56.
Lloyd enjoyed traveling. He was awestruck by the mountains in Colorado.
In later years, as Lloyd slowed down his farming, he began collecting, restoring and showing antique tractors.
Lloyd led a long and fulfilling life. He passed away on June 4, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Muskogee, OK at the age of 92 years. He was preceded in death by his wife; Verna Mitchell; parents, Opal and Albert Mitchell; sister, Mabel Evelyn French and a brother, Cecil Harvey Mitchell.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
