Funeral services for Zelma Okal Byrd, 87, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the First Freewill Baptist Church in Wagoner with the Reverend Fred Redfern and the Reverend Darrell Ragsdale officiating. Zelma was born at the family home in Hulbert, Oklahoma on January 20, 1921 to John Isaac and Floda Mae (Charles) Steelmon. She grew up in Hulbert and graduated from high school there. On October 24, 1943, she was married to Robert W. Byrd. For a time Zelma taught school at the Elm Grove School as a War Teacher'. She continued expressing her love of teaching and children as a foster grandparent for over 20 years in the Hulbert and Wagoner public schools. Zelma enjoyed sewing and crocheting and activities outdoors such as camping, and fishing. She passed away Wednesday, June 18 at her home in Wagoner, surrounded by the love of the Lord and her family. Zelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert W. Byrd in 1986; a son, William Leroy Byrd; her 3 brothers, Claude, Troy and Harling Steelmon and her 3 sisters, Delphia Butler, Mable Smith and Opal Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Marsey of Wagoner; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, Samuel Ben Marsey Jr. and Carolyn, Sherrie Moody and Keith and Debbi Lawson and Brent, all of Wagoner; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl Steelmon and his wife, Betty Steelmon of Richland, Washington; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Interment will be in Lost City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Walt Benton, Johnny Merrell, Leslie Long, Nathan Jones, Mike Boswell and Billy Joe Dry. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel Marsey, Jacob Marsey, Brent Lawson, Hunter Marsey, Elijah Moody, Kenneth Halpain and Keith Moody. Online condolences may be left at www.mallettuneralhome.com.
